Elon Musk has confirmed yet another rename for his AI unit: SpaceXAI — a name that appeared only recently — will become SpaceXSI. The last two letters tell the story: Musk is shifting from “Artificial Intelligence” (AI) to “Super Intelligence” (SI), riding a new wave of terminology being pushed in the US. But as of now the SpaceXAI account on X still hasn't been renamed and Musk has given no concrete timeline — so the accurate phrasing is “will change”, not “has changed”.

Musk confirms: “we will make that change”

The news came from an exchange on X. A user asked whether SpaceXAI might be renamed SpaceXSI, and Musk replied that they would make the change (“Yes, we will make that change”). In a separate post, Musk wrote to the effect of “No more AI. SI, it's better”, and described SpaceX as a “super intelligence company”.

Why “SI”?

AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. SI here means Super Intelligence. The rename comes as the US government pushes the term “super intelligence” over “artificial intelligence”: President Donald Trump announced plans to sign a document renaming it and to promote the new wording. Some tech leaders have begun echoing it, and Musk is now putting that very terminology shift directly into the company name.

SpaceXAI is itself very new

This is what makes the story more than an ordinary rename. SpaceXAI was already the product of an earlier restructuring: xAI was folded into the SpaceX ecosystem and used the SpaceXAI brand in 2026 (the X account switched to @SpaceXAI in July). Some sources reckon the SpaceXAI name existed for only about 90 days before Musk confirmed the plan to move on to SpaceXSI. The chain xAI → SpaceXAI → SpaceXSI unfolded over a fairly short span — a rare pace of renaming for a major tech brand.

For now it's “will change”, not “has changed”

This is the point to get right. At the time of reporting, the SpaceXAI account on X still kept its old name, and Musk gave no concrete timeline for moving to SpaceXSI. So the accurate headline is “Musk confirms SpaceXAI will be renamed to SpaceXSI”, not “SpaceXAI officially renamed to SpaceXSI” — the two differ in status.

Can “Super Intelligence” really replace “AI”?

Not necessarily. This is still a fight over terminology and branding. A YouGov survey cited by Axios found 53% of respondents still think “artificial intelligence” is the better term, while only 9% chose “super intelligence”. In other words, SI is being pushed from the government level and by some tech leaders, but AI remains far more familiar to the public.

A name is not proven capability

One shouldn't infer from the rename that Musk is claiming his AI has “reached superintelligence”. The current news only confirms that Musk wants to use SI / Super Intelligence instead of AI in the company name. It does not automatically prove that Grok or today's systems have met any agreed technical definition of “superintelligence”. Branding is one thing; proven capability is another — and if the two aren't separated, a headline can easily become “Musk claims his AI has reached superintelligence”, which the current sources do not say.

The most notable part may not be the name

SpaceXSI sounds like a small change: swap AI for SI. But it signals a bigger debate taking shape — Artificial Intelligence (AI) vs Super Intelligence (SI). For years, “AI” has been almost a household word; now some powerful figures in the US government and tech industry want to replace that very term. The interesting question isn't just “what will SpaceXAI be called”, but: in a few years, will we still call all these systems “AI”? For now the answer is: unknown — but Musk has at least picked a side for his next name.
