ROSÉ has released the single “new trick” with a brighter, bolder new music video. Notably, the entire MV was shot on iPhone 18 Pro under the direction of Dave Meyers, turning the BLACKPINK member's return into a project that is equal parts music and technology.

What is “new trick”?

“new trick” is ROSÉ's new solo single, released in mid-September 2026.

According to Yonhap citing The Black Label, it is an energetic garage-punk track carrying a message about overcoming heartbreak and hardship in love by finding a “new trick” — a new way to get back up and keep moving forward.

The song is co-written by ROSÉ with Amy Allen and Andrew Wells. Amy Allen previously worked with ROSÉ on “APT.”, while Andrew Wells collaborated with her on “Stay a Little Longer”.

Notably, the energy of “new trick” differs clearly from the more subdued tones heard on the album rosie.

In an interview with Vogue, ROSÉ said the track was written during a busy week, about two days after the Met Gala. She also shared that at that point she no longer felt like continuing to write sad songs as before.

The story of “new trick”: rising up instead of getting stuck

“new trick” is not merely the name of a song.

As The Black Label describes it, “new trick” represents how a person finds their own method to move on after being hurt.

This also explains why the song has faster, stronger energy instead of continuing down a ballad or sad-pop direction.

Vogue describes “new trick” as a shift from the melancholy of rosie toward a brighter, more confident ROSÉ.

Still, it is too early to treat a single release as evidence of ROSÉ's entire next musical direction.

The most interesting detail: the whole MV was shot on iPhone 18 Pro

This is what pushes “new trick” beyond an ordinary music video.

The MV was made as part of Apple's Shot on iPhone campaign and filmed entirely on iPhone 18 Pro.

According to Branding in Asia, the crew used more than 30 iPhone 18 Pro units across many different setups during production.

What stands out is not just “an MV shot on a phone,” but a large-scale music product from an international artist being used to prove how deeply a smartphone can take part in a professional image-production workflow.

That is also why Apple placed “new trick” in the camera campaign for its new iPhone generation.

The man behind the MV: Dave Meyers

“new trick” is directed by Dave Meyers, who has made music videos for major artists such as Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Ariana Grande, SZA and Harry Styles.

Using a veteran MV director makes the project more interesting on the tech side. Instead of a simple test video to prove a phone camera works, Apple and ROSÉ placed the iPhone inside a production led by a music director with years of experience.

This raises a more compelling question: how close are smartphones getting to professional cameras in commercial content production?

The answer can't rest on the final MV alone, because professional production also involves lighting, rigs, post-production, color grading and a whole crew behind the scenes. But “new trick” is still a notable showcase of using a smartphone in a big production.

“new trick” also reveals a different ROSÉ

If rosie was tied to personal love stories and many quiet moments, “new trick” shifts to a different mindset.

ROSÉ told Vogue she wanted something “cute and fun” and felt it was the right time to show a different version of herself.

So the point of the single isn't necessarily that ROSÉ “completely changed.” It can be seen more simply: ROSÉ is trying to expand her musical palette, and “new trick” is one of the first steps in that process.

This is not the new album yet

One detail worth clarifying. “new trick” is currently released as a standalone single. Apple Music lists it as a single track, about 3 minutes 02 seconds long.

Vogue reports ROSÉ is working on her second solo album, expected in 2027, but “new trick” should not be described as a confirmed track on that album without a corresponding official announcement.

  • New single: confirmed.
  • New MV: confirmed.
  • New album: in development.
  • Whether “new trick” belongs to the album: not to be assumed yet.

From “APT.” to “new trick”

ROSÉ enters a new phase after the international success of “APT.” and the album rosie. But instead of trying to make a “second APT.”, “new trick” shows a different direction in sound and visuals.

The combination of ROSÉ, Amy Allen / Andrew Wells, Dave Meyers, Apple and iPhone 18 Pro places the project at the intersection of K-pop, international pop, music video and consumer technology. That may also be why “new trick” is more notable than an ordinary single release.
